On Saturday regime and Russian airstrikes intensified on Idlib in what appears to be a prelude to the long anticipated campaign to regain control of the province.
Only a day before, thousands of Syrian men, women and children took the streets in over 120 cities towns and villages across the remaining liberated areas under the slogan ‘resistance is our choice’.

IDLIB: The American and U.N. allegation, wholly unsupported by any facts, that 3 million civilians live in Idlib is pure folderol befitting a pathological administration like that of Donald Trump’s or Staffan De Mysterious’ curious bullfight with the truth. The fact is that there are no more than 300,000 Idlibis, most having escaped to neighboring areas under the control of the SAA or to Europe where they are overstaying their welcome.
According to the Ba’ath Party, there were 60,000 trained terrorists in Idlib and northern Hama, but, that number has been reduced to 33,000 due to defections, desertions or early retirements to Europe.
The major terrorist grouping in Idlib is the one which keeps trying to reinvent itself. It’s now called the Hay`at Tahreer Al-Shaam (The Committee to Liberate the Levant – yawn) and is led by everybody’s favorite barbarian: Abu Muhammad Al-Jawlaani who was born in a lizard’s den as Usaamaa Al-‘Absi Al-Waahidi in Dayr Al-Zor. There is no difference between HTS, Alqaeda or Jabhat Al-Nusra. The HTS also contains two main groups who have been in the news of late. But, make no mistake about anything here: these 2 groups are under the strict command of the Turkish government as is HTS. The Turk pretense to caring about the civilians of Idlib is about as sincere as Sylvester the Cat’s promise to protect Tweety Bird.
The two (2) groups are: 1. The Islamic Turkistaan Party. This group is almost all Uighers from Western China and a regiment of Chinese Special Forces are on the ground in Syria to insure they don’t go back and resettle. The Uighers were brought over to Syria by a Nusra blowhard named Abu Rabaah.
The second group is called Soldiers of the Caucasus – double-yawn (Ajnaad Al-Qawqaaz.) A small minority of Turkmen make up the balance of this of this group. However, the Turkmen don’t find the Uighers (pronounced: “weeger”) palatable as they have not developed a taste for Dim Sum or pressed duck. The Turkmen are found mostly in the Turkmen Moutains or Jisr Al-Shughoor. They were established by another bloviator-turned-preacher named Abu Ridhaa Al-Turkistaani.
Both groups receive logistical support from the Turkish MIT, i.e. the Turk CIA, the CIA itself, the British MI6, the Zionist Entity and another criminal enterprise led by Ibraaheem Mansoor. This group of Turkic origin (Turanian, specifically) was established by a Zionist cretin named Mo’eez Cohen (real name: Max Byalistock). It is primarily responsible for resupply and weapons acquisition, intelligence and urban warfare. It also includes, as you might guess, 3000 Chechens.

You are probably correct in [some
or most] (Norm’s edit: 1st edit:what is in brackets is an amendment from “in all;” 2nd edit: strikethrough was added as more information was verified) of your purports, Susan. But the point of Leila’s piece is that “ordinary” Syrians are caught in the crossfire, and bombs don’t discriminate between “terrorists” and children, of whom there are a great many.Furthermore, if it is true that the majority of Syrians in Idlib province are unaligned with Hay`at Tahreer Al-Shaam while also bridling at the thought of finding themselves once again under the domination of Damascus, the targets of the coming intervention will not be limited to the takfiris. But you can read as well and better than I can — you don’t need me to interpret Al-Shami for you . . .

Karen Abuzayd, who is an investigator for the UN Commission of Inquiry, clearly states, starting at 3 minutes and 12 seconds, that there are 3 million civilians.
Who is correct: you or Karen Abuzayd?

From the Report of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syria Arab Republic A/HRC/39/65, page 16 (see the link in the foregoing comment), all that follows is a quote, with some unavoidable changes in the format:
Idlib governorate
86.
More than half of the 2.5 million people residing in Idlib [Norm’s emphasis] have been displaced since the onset of conflict, often multiple times. During the period under review alone, more than 500,000 civilians had been displaced to and within Idlib. Beginning in April, many of the 80,000 Syrian men, women and children predominantly from eastern Ghouta, rural Northern Homs (see paras. 73–76 above). and Yarmouk camp in Damascus (para. 79) were forcibly displaced to Idlib following the conclusions of the “evacuation agreements”. Living conditions in severely overcrowded areas were further strained by the new influx, with those displaced often left to fend for themselves, without the bare necessities required for survival.
87.
Those displaced to makeshift camps in rural areas throughout Idlib have been particularly vulnerable. Exposure to heavy rains and floods at the beginning of the year distressed affected communities, most of whom are forced to live without potable water and other basic necessities, such as fuel and blankets. The delivery of medical services has been limited; some doctors, working alone and without basic medical supplies, treat as many as 200 patients a day. Educational opportunities for children in camps are largely unavailable.
88.
Overwhelmed by the sheer number of displaced persons, aid organizations in Idlib reported enormous difficulties in conducting their operations. The largest number of persons displaced since the onset of the conflict has coincided with a shortage of international funding, making it impossible for aid teams to deliver basic life-saving aid, despite their full access to certain areas. Indiscriminate attacks against communities of internally displaced persons make aid operations even more difficult.
89.
In northern Idlib, for example, the Atma cluster of camps for internally displaced persons was attacked on 6 February. At approximately 10 a.m., one mortar hit Al-Bayan camp, while two others struck Al-Jazeera camp. A girl displaced from Raqqah in 2017 was killed, and at least seven other displaced persons were wounded, including the father of the girl, another 17-year-old girl, a 6-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl. Several witnesses pointed out that the shelling had originated from the Deir Ballut area, at the time under the control of YPG, which committed the war crime of launching indiscriminate attacks against Al-Bayan and Al-Jazeera camps, and further seriously contravened the right to life, liberty and security of person.

From the Moon of Alabama:
That’s the most “rational” lowball figure that I’ve so far encountered pertaining to the number of people in Idlib. Under 2 million, but greater than 1 million. That is still a lot of people.
But, hey, may the most righteous, anti-imperialistic, and humanitarian bombs prevail in Idlib.
Or as Michael Karadjis once described the thinking:
The logic is also precisely expressed by Leila Al-Shami:
